Tour detail

Hiking from Salzburg, Mozart’s birthplace, you will explore Salzkammergut area where crystal clear lakes mirror steep-sided mountains of the Alps. This magnificent natural landscape has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and its salt deposits were already being exploited as early as the 2nd millennium BC. You will overcome most of the difficult altitude changes via cable car or cog train, and savor the sweeping views from the mountain tops without the strain of climbing the mountain. The region offers a wealth of picturesque towns and spas, as well as underground stalactite caves and salt mines; you will walk along the ancient Salt Brine Trail, and enjoy boat rides on three different lakes. All this will make your week into a spectacular, well-rounded adventure.

Itinerary

  • Day 1
    Arrival to Salzburg

Today is your arrival day in Salzburg, a city surrounded by snowy peaks of the Alps; it was the birthplace of Mozart, and the city of the Sound of Music. The enchanting silhouette of the fortress, the cathedral, and church steeples in this Baroque city north of the Alps are so beautiful that it is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
There is so much to see and enjoy you may want to spend an extra day there.

    Overnight in Salzburg.

  • Day 2
    Salzburg - Mt. Schafberg - St. Gilgen (11 km / 7 miles, elevation gain 360 m)

In the morning meet our representative/guide in your hotel. After your welcome briefing you will be transferred to Sankt Wolfgang, where you will board the century-old cog railroad up the mountain of Schafberg (1,783 m / 5,849 ft) to take in the breathtaking view of seven lakes and the surrounding peaks. After a ride down to Sankt Wolfgang, you will walk along the Wolfgangsee Lake shoreline following “the Pilgrims’ Way” to St. Gilgen.

    Overnight in St. Gilgen.

  • Day 3
    St. Gilgen - Bad Ischl (16 km / 10 miles, elevation gain 270 m)

Take the boat from St. Gilgen to the lake promenade of Strobl from where you will follow a path along the Ischl River and walk up to Nussensee lake hidden amidst the deep forest. The Elisabeth Forest Trail will then lead you to the magical Kalvarienberg church on the outskirts of the historic spa town of Bad Ischl, the cultural and geographic center of the Salzkammergut. After your walk you can spend a few hours in the relaxing therapeutic waters of the thermal baths.

    Overnight in Bad Ischl.

  • Day 4
    Bad Ischl - Mt. Katrin - Bad Goisern (12 km / 7.5 miles, elevation gain 260 m)

Enjoy your morning sightseeing in Bad Ischl, a favorite summer residence of the Hapsburg Imperial family. Visit the former Hotel Austria where Emperor Franz Joseph and Elisabeth of Bavaria (the famous Sisi) were engaged, or the Imperial Villa, a wedding present to Emperor Franz Joseph.
Walk along the River Traun to the cable car station and take a ride to an altitude of 1,415 meters. From there it is a short walk to the top of Mt.Katrin (1,542 m) for stunning views of the surrounding mountainscape and lakes of the Salzkammergut, and especially the Dachstein glacier. After ride down you join the well-marked “Salzkammergut Brine Trail” to Bad Goisern. This lovely place used to be the “Monarchy’s prettiest town”, and still hasn’t lost any of its charm.

    Overnight in Bad Goisern.

Before you leave Bad Goisern you can visit the traditional cobbler’s shop where the famous Goiserer hiking boots have been made by hand since the time of Empress Sisi.
This easy walking day will bring you from Bad Goisern to the scenic lakeside Hallstättersee Ostuferwanderweg trail which follows the eastern bank of Hallstättersee lake. To get to the town of Hallstatt which gave its name to the early Iron Age Hallstatt culture and is a World Heritage Site, you will take the ferry across the lake. In Hallstatt you may be interested in the world’s oldest salt mines (established 1607).

    Overnight in Hallstatt.

  • Day 6
    Hallstatt - Mt. Krippenstein - Hallstatt (12 km / 7.5 miles, elevation gain 220 m )

In the morning you will take the ferry to Obertraun, and walk to a cable-car station to get a ride just below the peak of Mt.Krippenstein (2,108 m). At the top you will explore the famous Five Fingers overlook, before riding the cable car back down. From there the ferry will take you back to Hallstatt.

Take an afternoon train to Linz and Vienna or back to Salzburg

Best time to go

The Central European continental climate consists of hot summers and cold winters. In summer it can get quite hot, though the waterside breeze can make it pleasant to walk along the Austrian lakes and rivers even then. June and September are generally good months taking advantage of cooler, but still warm weather.

It must be noted that July and August are the busiest months when most people go for their holidays here. We mention this with regard to seeing cultural monuments and UNESCO sites with greater ease and less people around.
